How to use the spirometer

The instructions below illustrate how easy it is to obtain accurate pulmonary function data. It is useful for the health professional carrying out the test to learn the technique of using the spirometer and demonstrate it to the patient.

VM1

  1. Insert a clean disposable mouthpiece for every patient
  2. To switch on, press the orange ON button once. Tell the patient to breath in as deeply as possible
    (to full inspiration)
  3. Seal lips around the mouthpiece
  4. Blow out – hard and fast – in one continuous blow, until there is nothing left to blow
  5. Inspect results on the display
  6. Print results and volume/time curve, via a printer, if required

VM PLUS

  1. Designed for both the professional and the patient, serial FEV1 and PEF measurements can be recorded by asking the patient to follow the simple steps below:
  2. To switch on, press the green ON button once
  3. Wait for the first “BEEP”, then breath in as deeply as possible (to full inspiration)
  4. Seal lips a round the mouthpiece Blow out – Hard and fast – in one continuous blow, until you hear the second “BEEP”
  5. The machine will now store the readings automatically against the clock and calendar, so you can put the machine away until the next time it is needed.
  6. On return of the device, transfer the pef and FEV1 data to your computer by using the connecting lead and the software supplied with every VM PLUS.
